What’s your one word theme for 2017

By |Published On: January 4th, 2017|

I recently read a story about a 60-year old woman walking into a store to buy shoes. After some time being offered by the 20- something sales girl platform shoes and high heel pumps, she turned and tapped the girl on the shoulder saying: I am done with that. Then I read several other women stories sharing what they are done with no matter if they are 20, 30 or 40 something.

Every year I also have certain things I feel I am done with, things like processed food, alcohol, coffee, doing business with a friend, sharing a villa with family friends, playing Canasta all night, Christmas back at my parents (sorry mom), printed tights, tattoos, but well, this year I realised I am finally done with something in a much more kind of grown up way, something that people do only at my age. I finally feel I am done with the idea of “having it all” whatever that means. I finally have arrived at the notion that building a life on your own terms is much more exciting and fun and it makes my life way more meaningful and fulfilled. I just can’t go on pursuing perfection and never be satisfied with my own self every time I look in the mirror. So I decided this past year to embrace a different journey of twists and turns and adventure, of getting out of my comfort zone in order to build sustainable meaning in my job and life.

What I found out was endless opportunities and a different person who was waiting for me to flourish.

Based on that notion I also set up my one word theme for the year: Flourish (not thrive), because for me flourish is a little different from the sense of thrive and wellbeing. I see it as evolving and personal growth, but doing it in your own way and in your own rhythm. Building my own business last year meant to me growing together with it, tuning into my talents and desire to serve and help others, tapping into different depths of my personality and character. So Flourish for me means being in an open-minded, vibrant state, creating conditions for being in your prime.

Of course, there are other words that come to mind, but you can choose them instead of me:

  • I like: Focus
  • I love: Now or Never
  • I am enticed by: Inspirit & Embody
  • Other words can be: Joy, Embrace, Grow, Patience, Love, Celebrate, Discover
