The Scent of a Mum

The smells of mum-hood sometimes include non-pleasant odors such as dirty diapers, spilled milk, vomit…things that can make your nostrils flare in search of fresh air.   So when given the opportunity to attend Globus Beauty Days and hear about the art of perfumery and the science of scent from one of the world’s most revered perfume critics, Luca Turin, I was beyond excited. Just like a relaxing nighttime beauty regime or facial massage, a spray of perfume can also be a nice way to pamper yourself, revitalize you mid day, enlighten your senses, and keep your sparkly self feeling fresh & alive despite your heightened busy-ness and responsibility as a mum.

Luca Turin is a biophysicist who has written/co-written many books on perfumes including “The Secret of Scent”, “The A-Z Guide to Perfumes”, and “The Little Book of Perfumes”. When asked if he had any tips on purchasing a perfume for a loved one (including a gift to yourself!), he suggested to block out a day dedicated solely to perfume shopping. Bring a book and put each smell strip in a different page to separate after smelling. Then go home, take some time to digest all that you have sniffed and check them out again in the morning when your senses are at their best. He then jokingly suggested another option was to buy his guidebook and gift that!

The renowned author introduced his favorite recent niche perfumes created by two Chinese brothers Eugene and Emyrs Au. They are self-taught perfumers with a love of smell that created Auphorie.  Eugene and Emyrs take inspiration from different forms of art, visual art, fashion, design, photography, traditional art, flowers, tea and use this inspiration to take perfume to a multisensory level. And they also believe in charitable giving, 10% of the profits will be donated each month to different organizations. They give their customers an opportunity to lift their spirits and also help those in need smell the roses too. Sounds like a win win to me. The sample smelled incredible!

So next time you are in Globus, check out their vast array of both large and niche brand perfumes. When you think about building your brand and embracing yourself as both a mum and a strong feminine iconic woman, a fragrance can be a perfect add to your self-care and signature image. As Luca Turin described perfume he mentioned two quotes that stuck with me “When I smell a perfume, I hear a story” and “Perfume is music you can wear”.   So Mums, what song are you going to sing today and what story are you going to tell? The possibilities are endless and it’s all up to your wild imagination.
