Over the past few years sustainability has become a hotly debated topic organically growing into a real trend. Despite the fact that in fashion many brands are trying new creative ways of becoming environmentally friendly, there’s still little talk of sustainable lingerie, although it is probably the one most deserving of attention.

First of all lingerie can be both a necessity and a luxury. Just look at its history progressing from a basic utility to an object of femininity and sexual fantasies. Not to mention that today lingerie plays a role as an empowering female tool, as it makes women feel sexy and desirable but not just under the male gaze, but for themselves.

Second there is nothing more intimate and personal than what we wear underneath our everyday wardrobe. It is the one thing that you are always in direct contact with, so it makes sense to look for materials that take proper care of your intimate parts. For example, synthetic materials tend to trap moisture which encourages the growth of bacteria and causes all types of infections. Not only that but synthetic clothing tends to contain many chemicals that were used during the production process.

Last but not least don’t forget that sustainable lingerie has become really important representing the divine feminine connection. In one way it symbolises the connection you have with yourself and the pure and authentic feminine energy you possess. On the other hand it can be something that connects you to the planet Earth, which represents feminine energy too. A beautiful sustainable lingerie honours but it also pays respect to the Earth and the healthy life of the planet.

And since sustainable lingerie seems to us like the most graceful and fine gift for Christmas, we would like to guide you to three brands we love, which are mindfully investing in sustainable intimates, ethically made and environmentally friendly, with a narrative that reminds that you are the main character of your life and every body is as perfect as it is.

MOYA KALA:

Let’s begin by drawing your attention to Moya Kala, a Swiss brand that stands for lingerie and loungewear that is produced ethically and with dignity – “by women for women”. Moya Kala produces basics, revisited in different colours and styles, thus avoiding over production. Focused on luxury, elegance and ethical production, the brand ensures a super-inclusive size range with sensual but fierce products, timeless and versatile.

“We create puristic, aesthetic and durable garments while focusing on quality, sustainability and fairness along the entire supply chain. What this means is that we not only develop sustainable processes but we advocate responsibility and consideration for people and the environment within the textile supply chain.” – explains Luana Derungs, Co-Founder of Moya Kala.

Without a doubt here at Mums in Heels, we are strongly drawn to the same values that Moya Kala promotes alongside with their products: to raise women’s dignity, whether it is the woman who created the garment or the woman who wears it.

More than that we like how specific and transparent the brand is when it comes to their fabrics and production. Moya Kala invests a lot of time and effort in researching and sourcing the most sustainable fabrics and trimmings, gradually improving and replacing less sustainable materials with more sustainable ones as soon as they are available. We can name Cupro and Lyocell as materials widely used by Moya Kala; we are speaking about two biodegradable textile fibers which, compared to cotton, only require about 5 to 10 percent of the amount of water for their production, making them much more planet friendly.

The chemicals for the production of the fabric are recovered and reused until they are completely exhausted and not hazardous for health and the environment.

The beauty of the garments, the comfort of the fabrics and the ideology behind the brand make Moya Kala one of our favorite lingerie and loungewear brands ever. Make sure you have at least one in your wardrobe to feel the real meaning of self- love.

TROO

Often stuck in old narratives, you may be thinking that sustainable lingerie means cotton bras and granny panties? Well, think again! Troo’ sustainable and ethical lingerie line can’t wait to prove you wrong!

The brand, which was started by two women, born in South Africa, now living and working in Switzerland, offers soft, dreamy, sensual and playful feminine intimates (as well as clothing) rooted in a sense of adventure, fearlessness and femininity. Mums in Heels loves the Troo Brand small family ethos, the culture of togetherness, the transparent and honest communication to their customer.

We also love how well Troo communicates all the aspects of their work, explaining in details that they use recycled lace and thread sourced from a company with zero-waste policy, utilising solar energy from the warm South African sun.

What we learned from the two founders and sisters, Nic and Steff Fitzgerald is that they like to keep their pieces limited and are careful to balance the company growth. Their main goal is to educate as many people as possible on why it is so important to buy from brands who are truly committed to helping preserve the environment and be transparent about the amazing people you are supporting when you buy from them.

“We absolutely love what we do. We are proud of what we do and it makes us very very happy to send out such beautiful packages to our amazingly loyal customers. We hope that we can continue to bring smiles to our customers and be able to earn enough money that we can still support our families by doing something we truly love” – the words of Nic Fitzgerald, one of the two south africans sisters founder of the brand. We “trooly” love this brand!

CALIDA

“CALIDA focuses on sustainability – long before it was cool. With “C THE FUTURE”, we want to encourage rethinking, inspire and set a good example. Because sustainability should not be a fashion, but a promise”, is written on Calida’s About page. Over the last 75 years since the company was started, it has become one of Europe’s leading underwear brands, representing innovative materials and associated with Swiss premium quality. In 2016, the brand became the world’s first underwear company to introduce the MADE IN GREEN by OEKO-TEX® label. Since then CALIDA works hard to maintain its role as a pioneer in sustainability, adding numerous new men’s and women’s styles to its MADE IN GREEN range every season. The children’s range has been fully certified since autumn 2016.

All products are developed in Sursee, Switzerland. The range includes daywear, sleepwear and loungewear.

One of the latest CALIDA projects is the 100% NATURE collection, featuring the first completely compostable (fully biodegradable) products) made from 100% cellulose material, manufactured in a closed, particularly energy-efficient cycle and sourced from sustainably managed forests. The collection is produced using 100 % Swiss sourced, carbon-neutral biogas.

We love CALIDA for their commitment and dedication to making sustainable lingerie more popular, accessible and wearable. Their products may lack the charm and personality of a small local brand, and the exciting creative and playful designs of TROO and Moya Kala intimates, but their value lies in the functionality and effortlessness of the products.
