The promise of a morning cup of coffee

Coffee and a cat

When I think of my bad habits on a good day I can be very snobbish and narcissistic. I kind of think that without my flaws I’ll be loosing part of my charm, part of my irresistible contradictory and complicated self, which also makes me look a bit mysterious and aloof in the eyes of others. And this looks all positive to me (on a good day).

On the rest of the days when I like to pick on myself just about anything, I suddenly start counting my (and my partner’s) cups of coffee, chocolate bars, the days I missed exercising or practicing meditation, wine and late hours with my computer in bed. The list can go on forever, but not to bore you with the details, one of the questions I’ve been focusing on lately is coffee. What’s so bad about drinking coffee and how much is too much per day?

I have to tell you every time I meet someone who says they don’t drink coffee, it feels like I’ve met an alien…not drinking coffee is such a radical idea to me that I may as well give up sleep at all. Can you imagine, there are people who never taste …. In fact when I think about what coffee tastes like I can’t really think of anything in particular. I can’t allure anyone into drinking it when we talk about taste, but if I have to make someone imagine what coffee taste like, then I can try… So let’s imagine what a lazy morning in a satin slip dress with green lace on the edges can taste like, let’s imagine a long stretch in bed and some old memory lingering in your room, the cat sitting on the window and the pink geranium spreading its charm already in the luminosity of the early hours.

Coffee is like a promise to me, for the ingenuous to arrive in your random day, the warm gentle sunrays falling down on your skin, the warm bed covered with my favourite books and magazines. Coffee is the first innocent curious and sleepy look in the mirror and the lazy jazz melody spilling out of the radio, no phones, no kids, nobody around, just you, your thoughts and your cup of coffee. This is what coffee means to me, but have no f* clue what it tastes like.

Now can you imagine the world going around without that coffee. If yes what reasons do you have for it? The least because the experts say it’s not good for our health and as it turns out for our weight and skin glow.

Not to drink: First, coffee is acidic which means it is bad for your bones, skin and immune system.

Second, coffee is increasing the production of cortisol secretion and this is related to stress and weight gain. It causes us to feel hungrier and gain weight in the mid section.

Third, coffee, just like sodium and alcohol, dehydrates the body. This makes the liver work overtime, which causes toxic build up in our bodies. When our bodies are in toxic overload, the presence of low-level toxins that make their way to our skin disrupt healthy skin function. Dehydrated skin as well means inflammation (redness) and premature aging (collagen loss).  Additionally, without enough water flushing your system, toxic buildup in the skin can also cause acne. On top of this if you add milk or cream to your coffee you run the risk of consuming additional acne boosters.

To drink: if we are a little more merciful or let’s just look on the bright side of the world: In the first place clean coffee helps protect your mental edge and performance, it makes you feel more energized and focused. According to Dave Asprey, the founder of Bullet Proof if you make his of Bulletproof® Coffee

for breakfast and eat nothing else you will experience one of the best mornings of your life, with boundless energy and focus. After one drink of you’ll never be tempted to eat fat-free, insulin-raising, fat-storing toast and oatmeal breakfasts again, says Asprey who lost 100 pounds without counting calories or excessive exercise, used techniques to upgrade his brain by more than 20 IQ points, and lowered his biological age while learning to sleep more efficiently in less time.

As it turns out coffee is not so bad for your health after all. The question, is are you willing to try the Bulletproof Coffee recipe at home and how do you feel about the idea of drinking coffee with butter in it. Let me know.
